How editing compliments lighting and camera work

When i started planning for my short film i thought about my editing process to make sure that the final edit comes out the best it can making sure the quality is the best it can be. During this process i was able to experience final cut pro in a more deeper level this allowed me to make my scenes more advanced and better quality.

When i started editing my short film i noticed that editing helps compliment the lighting and camera work as things can be fixed we see this in the following scenes:

  • Placing two scenes together (Camera - Lighten and opacity)

The use of cinematography

In my short film "Mystery Magic", to add cinematography in my short film i used different equipment. The reason i used this equipment was to create cinematography for my audience to enjoy my short film and have the best effects possible. I decided to use cinematography in the start of my film and the middle of my short film. My evidence below shows me using cinematography:

Color changing lamp: I used this color changing lamp in my short film to create cinematography. This lamp helped me create different colors in my short film match my theme and set the mood for the audience. Due to this lamp having different setting and modes i was able to create different colours with this lamp to match the mystery theme of my short film. The reason i used this lamp was to create bright/dark lighting. This lamp helped me create lighting that humans can not create naturally this lighting is not natural.

In the picture above we can see i used a lamp to show cinematography in my short film by using this lamp i was able to expand and make the lighting better in the background of my short film. This allowed me to make my short film better for my audience.

Furthermore, to match the dark and dull mystery theme for my short film i used natural lighting on a day it was gloomy and dull to engage the audience to feel more connected to my short film as it is natural real lighting and not edited.

In my short film i included different lighting and camera angles and mise-en-scene. Underneath is my evidence of me using these techniques in my short film:

I used cinematography in my short film to keep my audience engaged to make my short film better and more interesting.

Export format

Once I finished editing my final edit for my short film that I have made. I then proceeded to export it to youtube. In the picture on top we can see the settings of the export I used for my final edit. The format that I used when uploading my short film was .mov file to make the quality better. Th resolution of my video was 1920 x 1080 this is because I recorded my footage in the resolution of 1080. The video codec for my short film was H.264 this helps compresses the footage.

Post production tools

When editing my short film i realised i used the trimming tool a lot this was beacuse some of the clips were to long. The trimming tool allowed me to make my short film better and trim the unnecessary bits. We can see this in the picture below:

Another editing tool i used in my post production stage was overlapping two clips together to create an effect of two things happening at once. We can see this in the picture below:

Another editing tool i used in my post production stage was sound i recorded room sound and then added it onto final cut pro.

Another editing tool i used  in my post production stage was an overlap of text to empathies on what's going on. We can see this in the picture below:

Evidence when using lighting equipment

When i produced my short film, i had used different lighting equipment to make my scenes more interesting and better quality for the audience to enjoy my short film more. We see this in the pictures below:

Furthermore, i was able to use this lamp that changes colour with adjusting the setting on it to match and fit my theme. This allows the audience to feel more engaged because of the theme i have picked to film my short film which was mystery.

Furthermore, to match the dark and dull mystery theme for my short film i used natural lighting on a day it was gloomy and dull to engage the audience to feel more connected to my short film as it is natural real lighting and not edited.

Changes I had to make during my storyboard during production

When i was making my short film there was some changes that i had to make, one of the changes i had to make was the room i used in my short film this was due to the room not being available therefore i used another room this makes a change to my story board because the description on the picture changes because its a different room. However i did not use this scene in my final edit because when i got teacher feedback i was told to take it out.

Another change that i made on my storyboard is taking out a whole page this was due to my short film being to long.

The final change that i made on my story board is the ending i said i will just right the end however i ended up doing credits instead.

Feedback and self reflection from focus group

The focus group that i have carried out i have been given some improvements, achievements and strengths such as:

The strengths that my focus discussed i have in my short film was firstly my storyline they had said its straightforward and they can easily pick up on what's happening  in my story. They also had said they really enjoyed the plot twist to my story. Another strength i had in my short film was having the magical aspects in my short film which means my storyline was understood. Another strength i had was my actors they performed well.

One of the weaknesses i had in my short film was the audio cutting of to soon. Another weakness i had i my short film was the dialogue cutting to fast and moving onto the second clip. Another weakness i had was my editing my focus group felt like i could of done a better job at editing. Another weakness i had in my short film was having jump cuts and wasn't in flow. Another weakness i had was not having enough context.

Lastly the improvements i needed to make was long out my sound towards the second clip and do a fade out. Another improvement i need to make is make my sound tracks more quitter then the actual dialogue audio. Another improvement that i need to make is on my sound tracks i need to fade them out more. Another improvement i need to make is my voice overs they were to loud and random the volume needs to be more low. Another improvement i could of made was reshooting some of my scenes because  the camera was shaky. Another improvement that i could of and should of made was longing out the scene were she goes into the dream.

Focus group questions

I came up with some questions that i will ask my focus group to collect feedback on how i performed and give my self feedback. Below are the questions that i will be asking them:

  1. What changes do you think i could of made?
  2. Is the storyline clear to understand?
  3. Are the actors doing a good job?
  4. If my short film was longer would u watch it?
  5. What did you not like?
  6. Do you think i should of used more sound to empathies on small detail?
  7. Did u as a audience like my camera angels i used?
  8. Was the audio clear?
  9. What were my weaknesses?
  10. What was my strengths in my short film?

Cinematic techniques:

In the process of making my short film i made sure i used different effects and technique for my target audience. In the process i used different cinematic techniques to make my film better for the audience to view. Cinematic scenes help the audience feel more engaged in what's going on.

Props:

When creating my short film i used props to make my film more engaging for the viewers. For instance i was able to a old cookbook that i made and i also used a box in "mystery magic" in my house. This allowed my to create suspense in my short film. This creates cinematic techniques with the mystery genre in my short film. When i was making my short film i had inspiration by the film "just add magic" from the scene:

From this scene in the film i was able to see how no one knows about magic and its a secrete and that allows the film to create suspense. I used this scene and twisted it into my own to keep magic a secrete.
